Just when I wrote in my previous post that there is not much to write about, the news was published that Rick van den Hurk got injured and cannot participate with the global match between Samurai Japan and the All European team.
To replace Van den Hurk manager Steve Jansen called up Mike Bolsenbroek of the Regensburg Legionäre.
Van den Hurk injured himself during the Spring Training camp of the current Japanese champion Fukuoka Softbank Hawks. Rick played a total of 50 games in six years at MLB level. After two successful seasons in the Korean KBO, the Softbank Hawks got interested in him and signed him to a two year deal.
Mike Bolsenbroek started playing baseball in the Netherlands but after a short stint with Hoofdklasse club HCAW, he moved to the USA to try his luck there. Eventually he ended up with the Regensburg Legionäre of the German first Bundes Liga (German Major League). Bolsenbroek debuted last year for the Dutch national team during the European Cup and pitched a seven inning (mercy rule game) perfect game vs Greece. In the final game of the second round vs Italy he kept the Italians scoreless in a complete game effort.
The European team will leave for Tokyo on March 3.
