The runs didn’t come cheap in the game between the Melbourne Aces and the Adelaide Bite.
Adelaide took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth when Kyle Petty belted a hanging slider to left field for a homerun.
But in the next inning, Melbourne tied the game when Matt Zablan got on base on a bunt single, moved to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on another wild pitch. When shortstop Mason Pickard made a miscue on Tanner Vavra’s hit, Zablan scored the tying run.
Dutch pitcher Loek van Mil entered the game when it was still tied in the eighth inning. He started the inning by giving up a single to Matt Zablan, who advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt laid down by Logan Moon. Zablan even reached third base on a wild pitch but the Aces could not take advantage as Van Mil got out of the inning when he struck out Tanner Vavra and retired Keith Curcio on a 5-3 ground out.
Van Mil earned the win when John Schultz scored, what appeared to be, the winning run on a force out on second base with the bases loaded. Corey Lyon got on base on a fielders choice.
Kody Kersky earned the save. He gave up a single to lead off hitter Trey Vavra but then retired the next three batters that he faced.
Thanks to this outing, Van Mil lowered his ERA to 2.45. He now has a win and two saves under his belt.
