Groups of new European Cup: Curacao Neptunus in tough group

The European Cup for club teams will be played in Rimini (Italy ) in 2016.
A second facility is still up in the air, but it is very likely that San Marino will be the second host because a second ball field is needed so all games can be played in time. The Rimini Pirates recently announced that the facility of the Godo Knights would be the second facility but for some reason  the CEB (European Baseball Confederation) said that that wasn’t going to happen.

Anyhow, the groups of the tournament were announced.

L&D Amsterdam Pirates will be in the group with Italian champion Rimini Pirates, German runner up Regensburg Legionaere and the Czech champion Kotlarka Prague.

Reigning European champion and current Dutch champion Curacao Neptunus will be in a much tougher group with Fortitudo Bologna, San Marino and Heidenheim Heideköpfe.

In the previous years, L&D Amsterdam Pirates had the bad luck to draw two teams from the IBL, this time Neptunus has the bad luck.

Curacao Neptunus will play its first three games in San Marino, L&D Amsterdam Pirates will play its first three games in Rimini.

The classification of the participating teams can be derived from the final standings in the Qualifiying tournaments of the 2015 European Cup in Paris and Rotterdam. In Paris teams from Italy, the Netherlands, San Marino and Germany ended as first four in the standings. In Rotterdam, teams from the Netherlands,  the Czech Republic, Italy and Germany ended as first four.

Rimini Pirates is the current Italian Champion and Fortitudo Bologna was the runner up in 2015. Curacao Neptunus is the current Dutch champion. Since L&D Amsterdam Pirates won the regular competition, the team clinched a spot in the European Cup tournament. Kotlarka Prague is the current Czech champion. Heidenheim Heideköpfe is the current German champion and Regensburg was the runner up. San Marino is still the odd team. Officially San Marino is a sovereign state but the club is playing in the IBL and thus the team is automatically qualified for the European Cup.

The tournament will be played from May 31st through June 5th.
