A great promotion in Melbourne: Hall of Famer George Brett will coach the Melbourne Aces on Thursday, December 31st and Friday, January 1st as a guest coach.
Besides being a HOF member, Brett is also Vice President of Baseball Operations for the World Series Champion Kansas City Royals. Together with his brothers he also owns Brett Brothers Sports International, which manufactures bats, gloves, and other baseball equipment. Brett Brothers also own interest in several professional teams like the Tri-City Dust Devils (Northwest League) and the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (California League).
Besides his splendid Hall of Fame career, in which he collected 3,154 career hits (the most by any third baseman in major league history), Brett will be most remembered for the pine tar incident. He is also one of four players that has hit 300 home runs, collected more than 3,000 hits and posted a career batting average of more than .300.
The 13-time All-Star was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999 on the first ballot, receiving 98.2 percent of the vote. His No. 5 was retired by the Royals on 7 April 1994.
It can be expected that Melbourne Ballpark will be packed in the two games that George Brett will be around.
