Series del Caribe: Cuba advances by the skin of it’s teeth

CS

In a all or nothing game for both teams, Tigres de Ciego de Avilla from Cuba faced Leones del Escogido from the Dominican Republic. Both teams were without a win so far.

After Cuba took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a double by Yeniet Perez that drove in Alfredo Despaigne, the Dominicans bounced back in the bottom of that inning by scoring two runs when catcher Wilkin Castillo’s two-run double drove in Diory Hernandez and Alex Valdez.

A lot of innings with a lot of zeros on the board followed until the top of the eighth inning.  Cuba tied it all when Stayler Hernandez scored on Yuliesky Gourriel’s sac fly.

Eventually the game went into the eleventh inning. Fernando Rodney entered the game to keep the Cubans in check, but despite recording two (strike)outs, he allowed two runners as he made a throwing error. After giving up a walk, Yurisbel Gracial sacrificed to advance the runners to the next base. Eventually there would be a very unlikely game winner. Jose

Jose Adolis Garcia, game winner

Adolis Garcia didn’t manage to get a hit in five at bats when he walked to the batters box. In the meantime Rodney was replaced by Rafael Soriano. Soriano gave up the game winning hit to Garcia, which drove in two runs.

Jose Angel Garcia shut the door for the Dominicans by retiring the side in the bottom of the eleventh.

Thanks to this win, Cuba advances to the semis, where they will face unbeaten Venados de Mazatlan from Mexico. Cuba was no match for the Mexicans as they were beaten up 9-3.

The other semi final will be between Cangrejeros de Santurce and the Venezuelan representative Tigres de Aragua.
