More themed jerseys

In the past few weeks, many MiLB clubs presented their promotional schedule. There will be a variety of promotions like giving away bobbleheads or refrigerator magnets. Also varioius themed jerseys will be part of these promotional nights.

I think that the Fort Myers Miracle come up with the best themed jersey so far this season. The team will wear a jersey that looks like the one that the Bears wore in the 70s movie Bad News Bears. In this movie that starred Walter Matthau as coach of a little league team, Matthau wasn’t quite the role model as he cursed drank heavily.

Miracle Bad News Bears JerseyThe orignal movie played in 1976 and got positive commenst of the critics.
Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a score of 96%, based on reviews from 26 critics, with an average rating of 7.7/10. The site’s critical consensus reads, “The Bad News Bears is rude, profane, and cynical, but shot through with honest, unforced humor, and held together by a deft, understated performance from Walter Matthau.”

In the movie the team had a the name of a shirt sponsor on the back 🙂 I don’t think that the Miracle will wear this on the back of their jerseys. 😉

The film was such a success, that two sequels followed in 1977 and 1978. From 1979 to 1980, CBS aired a tv series based on the film, but this was short lived.
In 2005 Paramount pictures released a remake of the movie that starred Billy Bob Thornton in the role that Walter Mattau played in the 70s.

The Miracle will wear this themed jersey on May 6 when they host Bad News Bears night. One of the original movie’s cast member will attend the game and will sign autographs.

The Columbus Clippers will wear throw back jerseys on Thursday home games. They will interact with the fans on the social media and let them vote for their favorite throw back jerseys.

More teams will host throwback nights. The Nashville Sounds will also host a throwback Thursday, but they will only wear the jersey of the 1978 Sounds, when the team played in the AA Southern League. On the left you see a 1978 jersey of the Sounds (never knew that Donnie Baseball played for the Sounds).

This year, the Tulsa Drillers (AA Texas League affiliate of the Colorado Rockies) will celebrate its 40th anniversary. As part of the festivities, the club will have Anniversary Mondays on which they will wear retro caps. The club is planning to give away several retro jerseys as well. One of those giveaway jerseys is the jersey of “Pudge” Rodriguez on June 23. On that day, Rodriguez will be inducted into the Drillers’ hall of fame and of course he will attend the game.

Like every year the Albuquerque Isotopes will don the name Albuquerque Dukes, this year on June 10 as part of the Dukes retro night. On that night the team will be dressed like the Dukes.
This event has become a tradition for the Isotopes. Many teams in Albuquerque were named Dukes. The most recent was the team that played there from 1972 – 2000. In 2000 the team was moved to Portland to become the Beavers. That team eventually left for temporary home Tucson to become the Padres. The team ended up in El Paso to become the Chihuahuas.

For the change, a team comes up with a food themed jersey. The Stockton Ports will wear an asparagus jersey on May 21st as they host Asparagus Night. The region of Stockton is known for growing asparagus. A few years ago, the team had an alternate hat the featured a sailor holding an asparagus as a bat. Unofficially Stockton is named the asparagus capital of the world. Ports-Asparagus-Header

This is just an outline of the many throwback nights that will be held in 2016. Many of the jerseys that will be worn, will be up for auction to raise money for charity.

So if you are a jersey nut, check out the promotional schedule of your favorite or nearest MiLB team.
