Earlier today you could read here that the Mariners had placed Jesus Montero on waivers after a very disappointing Spring Training in which he only hit .237.
In the previous years Montero did not only struggle at the plate at MLB level, he als struggled with his weight. But it must be said that he reported at the 2015 ST camp about thirty pounds lighter than the year before. Next to dealing with a knee injury, Montero was also suspended 50 games due to drug violations.
At minor league level he knew how to handle the bat as he hit .355 with Tacoma. But as soon as he stepped into the batters box at MLB level, he seemed to have lost it, batting only .223. It was clear that he could not cope with Dae-Ho Lee’s numbers, the new acquisition of the Mariners.
Well, it didn’t take long before a club picked him up. The Toronto Blue Jays have claimed Montero off waivers. Perhaps if the new surroundings will work in his favour, he may be used as DH. But for now it will be more likely that he will be sent to AAA Buffalo to get some more experience as first baseman, although it looks like that the Jays have placed him on their 25-man roster.
