Today it was announced that Softbank Hawks pitcher, Rick van den Hurk has signed a three year extension with the club.
The deal is worth an estimated 1.2 billion Yen or USD 11.4 million plus incentives.
For the club it was important to sign Van den Hurk first than anyone else. The new contract will start in 2017 and run through the 2019 season.
Since his debut in June 2015, Van den Hurk won a record setting fourteen straight games for a debuting pitcher in the NPB.
Rick is in the second year of a two year contract and is currently off the roster due to signs of fatigue. He is undergoing tests to find out what the problem really is.
After spending time in US baseball with the Miami (then Florida) Marlins, for which he debuted in 2007, the Baltimore Orioles and the Pittsburgh Pirates, Rick moved to Korea, to play for the Samsung Lions of the KBO. Rick helped the Samsung Lions to win consecutive KBO titles in 2013 and 2014. Rick was also strikout leader in the KBO in the 2013 season.
He spent two years with the Lions before moving to Japan.
