The Brevard County Manatees, Advanced A affiliate of the of the Milwaukee Brewers, will leave Space Coast Stadium which is the Spring Training home of Washington Nationals.
The team will leave for Osceola County Stadium in Kissimmee FL, soon to be the former home of the Houston Astros.
The owners of the Manatees have struck a deal that will keep the team in Kissimmee for 25 years. The contract has many options built in, the first after three seasons.
The reason why the Manatees are moving to Kissimmee is that the USSSA (United States Specialty Sports Association) will move into Space Coast Stadium. They are moving from, you may guess it, Osceola County Stadium in Kissimmee. In fact both parties are trading places.
Perhaps if the Manatees had waited a bit more, perhaps they could have stayed in Brevard County as the county has pitched for a new ballpark elsewhere in the county, a $25-million facility.
With the move the team announced that it will adopt a new name for which they launched a website as part of a name-the-team-contest: www.probaseballbackincentralflorida.com. Fans will have until July 13 to send in names. From July 18the fans will have the chance to vote for the best name.
