Dutch shortstop Stijn van der Meer has made his professional debut in the organization of the Houston Astros. Unlike the recent announcement on this blog that he would be playing with the Tri-City ValleyCats, Stijn debuted with the Gulf Coast League Astros, the low rookie team of the Houston based MLB club.
The intention is that Stijn will head to the ValleyCats as soon as possible. Fun part of this all is that Stijn played together with Cuban defector Yuliesky Gurriel, who signed a .$47.5 million deal with the Astros.
Van der Meer debuted with the GCL Astros with a single in the third inning. In the remaining two at bats, Van der Meer flied out.
On the defensive side, the Dutch shortstop fielded six balls and did not commit an error.
It took Van der Meer rather long to report with the Astros because it took a while before the necessary visa issues were dealt with. So because of this, the Dutch talent first joined the ranks of team Kingdom of the Netherlands in the Haarlem Baseball Week.
Van der Meer was drafted bij the Astros in the 34th round of the 2016 amateur draf as 1027th overall player.
