Team Kingdom of the Netherlands is regarded as the big favorite to win this year’s European Cup. To meet that expectation, the Dutch had to win vs Great Britain.
The Dutch did what they had to do and won in seven inings.
Kingdom of the Netherlands 11 – 1 Great Britain
Diegomar Markwell pitched a solid game in which he allowed one unearned run on two hits and two walks. The unearned run was caused by an error that he made himself as he wanted to throw the ball towards second base to start a 1-6-3 double play. But instead of recording the first out at second, he threw the ball past second base and allowed Brett Rosen to advanced to third base. With Callum Murphy at bat and runners on the corners, Markwell balked in the sole run that the British scored.
Markwell earned the win as he pitched a six innings. Berry van Driel took the mound in the seventh inning and retired the side for the premature win.
Even though the Dutch outhit the British 12-2 it wasn’t really a price shooting match.
Dashenko Ricardo was the best Dutch hitter as he went 2 for 2 with two RBI and two runs scored. There were still a few Dutch players that did not record a hit.
As it seemed that the Dutch would end the first inning without scoring a run, Curt Smith drew a two out walk, followed by a double to left center field that drove in Smith for the opening run. Kalian Sams homered to left field and took Gianison Boekhoudt with him.
After a three run third inning, the Dutch scored another run in the fifth and in the sixth inning, team Kingdom of the Netherlands started with a lead off single, hit by Randolph Oduber. Curt Smith followed with a double to put runners in scoring position. Gianison Boekhoudt then drove in Oduber with a single to left field that put runners on the corners.
Kalian Sams loaded the bases with a four pitch walk before Yurendell de Caster made all runners advance a base with a single to right field. Dashenko Ricardo then hit a sac fly to left field to drive in Gianison Boekhoudt for the third run of the inning. Eventually the fourth run of the inning was driven in by Stijn van der Meer with a single to right field. Kalian Sams could score on the hit. When Yurendell de Caster tried to score from second base, he was thrown out on a perfect throw by right fielder Conrad Cornell.
The competitors for the European title, Czech Republic, Spain, Italy and perhaps France, all faced opponents that are potentially weaker than the British. So the 11-1 score wasn’t quite bad even though Italy won with a nineteen run margin and France won by fifteen runs.
