European Championship: Sweden gives Kingdom of the Netherlands a hard time

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor European Championship baseball 2016
Kingdom of the Netherlands  8  –  3  Sweden

In the final game of today, Sweden took on Kingdom of the Netherlands. It was not a good game: slow and plenty of errors (four on both sides). The Swedish manager brought pitcher Michael Fasth to the mound to start the game. But his pitching did not do justice to his family name. As a side arm pitcher his “fastball” topped around 75 mph. And once again the Dutch hitters had trouble with hitting his slow pitches.

Sweden took a bold 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as they started with agressive hitting and base running with Jim Ploeger on the mound. Johan Klarberg reached first base on a throwing error by third baseman Yurendell de Caster. Back-to-back singles made Klarberg score the opening run. A single down the left field line, hit by Adam Sorgi, drove in Nicholas Felice for the 2-0.

The Dutch got on the board in the third inning when Nick Urbanus scored on a 4-3 ground out hit by Roger Bernadina. But Sweden would score again in the bottom of the third when Matthew Merrifield doubled down the left field line and drove in Nicholas Felice.

Then, in a mind boggling move, Swedish manager Rickard Reimer, pulled Michael Fasth in favor of Albin Sivard. Fasth was practically unhittable for the Dutch hitters because of his off speed stuff. Anyhow, the move proved to be a lucky one for the Dutch as they scored four runs. With runners in scoring position, Sivard threw a wild pitch that allowed Gianison Boekhoudt to score the second run for the Dutch. After Stijn van der Meer drew a walk, he advanced to second on a failed pick off attempt. Kalian Sams could score the tying run on the play. Van der Meer advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch. With runners on first and second, Randolph Oduber eventually singled on a ground ball to right field that drove in Chadwick Tromp for the fifth run of the Dutch.

Eventually the Dutch scored three more runs in the seventh to reach the final score of 8-3.

Gianison Boekhoudt, best hitter

Jim Ploeger lasted six innings for the win. He gave up three runs (one earned) on five hits, walked one and fanned seven. Albin Sivard took the loss. He recorded one out in the fourth inning before he was pulled. He was tabbed for all four runs that the Dutch scored in the fourth inning. He gave up one hit and walked three.
Best hitter for the Netherlands today was Gianison Boekhoudt, who went 2 for 3 with a double and two runs scored.

The Netherlands will head to the next round in an attempt to clinch a spot in the final. Their next opponents will be Spain, Italy and Belgium. Sweden has finished in fourth place of group A and will face the number four of group B, France, for a game for the seventh spot.
