Afbeeldingsresultaat voor European Championship baseball 2016

On the final full day of the European Championship, Italy faced the Czech Republic, Spain took on Germany and the Netherlands faced Belgium.

  Czech Republic  2  –  3  Italy

In what would be a close game, Italy took an early lead when Alex Liddi hit a two out triple to right field and scored on Giuseppe Mazzanti’s double down the right field line.
After Jakub Malik of the Czech Republic hit a solo shot that cleared the left center field wall, Italy took the lead again. With two outs (once again) and runners in scoring position, Mattia Regionato drove in two runs with a single up to the middle.

In the eighth inning, Marej Hejma doubled down the left field line. After Jakub Malik drew a walk, Petr Cech reached base on a fielding error by Italy’s third baseman and Hejma advanced to third. Eventually he scored when  Martin Cervenka hit into a force out at second. But the Czech rally fell short as the fell to Italy 3-2.

Winning pitcher for the Squadra Azzurra was Gianfranco Rizzo, who pitched 1.1 innings in relief and allowed a hit and a walk and struck out one.
Despite pitching a good game, Martin Schneider was tabbed with the loss as he gave up three runs (one earned) on eight hits in seven innings. He did not issue a walk and struck out six.

Best Italian hitter was Giuseppe Mazzanti who went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI.

Here are the highlights of the game:

  Germany  0  –  3  Spain

Another close game during the European Championship. Both teams kept each other in check. For   innings. Both teams had runners in scoring position once but failed to pull the trigger. Even an error on the German side could not make the  Spanish score.
Only in the sixth inning Spain got its first hit, when Engel Beltre singled down the left field line. But then still Spain did not score.
Eventually in the eighth inning Spain broke the spell. A three run homerun by Jesus Martinez sealed Germany’s fate.
Even though Daniel Alvarez pitched a no-hitter in seven innings, with a walk given up and four strikeouts, the win went to Rhiner Cruz who pitched the final two innings in perfect fashion as did not allow a hit or a walk and struck out two.
Germany used a whopping six pitchers of which Lukas Steinlein took the loss. He recorded one out in the eighth inning but gave up two runs on one hit and a walk.
Best hitter for Spain was Engel Beltre who went 2 for 4.

Jesus Martinez hit a three run homerun for the win
