The game in the winners bracket was played in the afternoon today at MCU Park in Brooklyn. Israel and Brazil made it a promotion for baseball as this game was a real pitching duel.
Eventually Israel stayed at the right side of the score with the smallest possible margin.
Brazil 0 – Israel 1
Israel starting pitcher Corey Baker lasted five innings in which he kept Brazil limited to only one hit. Brad Goldberg earned the save as he retired the side in the ninth inning when striking out one.
In a very close game, Israel had a major scoring opportunity in the second inning when the team had runners in scoring position with only one out. But the team failed to score as the next two batters popped out and lined out.
In the fourth inning, Israel got on the board when Nate Freiman doubled to left field. Ike Davis then hit the ball to first baseman Dante Bichette jr who committed an error that allowed Davis to reach first base safely. Cody Decker drove in the sole run for Brazil as he hit a sac fly to center field that allowed Freiman to score.
If Bichette had not committed the miscue at first base, 19-year old Bo Takahashi may have kept Israel scoreless as well. In four innings the youngster kept Israel limited to only two hits.
Brazil could have tied the game if they had pulled the trigger in the sixth inning. With runners on the corners and only one out, the next two batters were retired for a blown scoring opportunity.
Thanks to this victory, Israel advances to the final of this Qualifier on Sunday in which it will face the winner of the game between Brazil and Great Britain or Pakistan.
The winner of this Qualifier will head to the main tournament and will play in Group B in Seoul, South Korea in which they will face South Korea, Chinese Taipei and Kingdom of the Netherlands.
