Through his Facebook page, the dad of Spencer Kieboom announced that his son has been called up to the Bigs. Spencer will wear the Nationals’ uniform tonight during an official MLB game for the first time in his career.
Last night Wilson Ramos left the game with a knee injury and Spencer is called up to fill the void that Ramos left on the roster. Next to Ramos, Jose Lobaton is also dealing with an injury.
Spencer never played higher than AA. This season with the Harrisburg Senators, Spencer struggled at the played. In 309 at bats, Spencer collected 71 hits resulting in a .230 batting average. On the defensive side Spencer also fell behind, compared to previous seasons.
In the 2015 and 2014 season, Spencer threw out a bit more than 40% of the potential base stealers. This year he did not get further than 25%. But to his defense, the previous two seasons were at A Full Season and A Advanced level. AA is quite a bit harder to deal with.
With a Dutch baseball father, who also played catcher in the Dutch Leagues, Spencer was selected for the Dutch team in preparation of the World Baseball Classic, but an injury withheld him from participating.
The Nationals are very high on Spencer as they placed him on their 40-men roster in November 2015 to make sure that he was not picked with the rule 5 draft.
