With their “Salute to Philadelphia night”, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs won the Golden Bobblehead Award during this year’s Minor League Baseball Promotional Seminar in Birmingham AL. With this theme night the club had a one game name change as it adopted the name Lehigh Valley Cheesesteaks.
Not only did the team adopt a different name, they rebranded for he occasion as the team wore a black jersey with Steaks written over the chest in dripping cheese yellow font.
As a little extra, the team let the fans choose whether it was better to eat a cheese steak with or without onions. As the option with onions got the most votes, the team wore a cap with a picture of a cheese steak with onions on the front of the crown.
After the game the jerseys were auctioned for charity.
“We raised the Steaks with this truly unique theme night and are thrilled to be recognized by our peers throughout Minor League Baseball,” explained IronPigs General Manager Kurt Landes. “We take great pride in being recognized as one of the most creative and forward-thinking organizations in the industry and are already preparing to up the ante for the 2017 season.
Next to the name and uniform change, other promotions for “Salute to Philadelphia Night” included:
- Appearances throughout the game by the world-famous Phillie Phanatic.
- Philadelphia beer selections from Victory Brewing Co. and Yards Brewing Co.
- Philadelphia-themed on-field contests between half-innings.
Even though the team was recognized as one of the most creative MiLB teams in 2016, the idea of a temporary name change isn’t really original as the Fresno Grizzlies started this in 2015 when they played several games as the Fresno Tacos, complet with Taco jersey and hat. The club repeated this because of the huge success of last year’s promotion.
Nevertheless, the Salute to Philadelphia Night was a big success and Cheesesteaks replica jerseys, along with official “Wit” and “Witout” caps and t-shirts are still available at LVCheesesteaks.com and at the Majestic Clubhouse Store at Coca-Cola Park.
