In the third game of team Europe, they “hosted” the rerpesentatives of the CPBL (Chinese Professional Baseball League from Taiwan). Team Europe came back from a 2-0 deficit to take a five run lead. Even though the CPBL scored some runs, Europe could keep the team at bay and won 9-5.
Chinese Taipei had a quick start in the first inning as they scored two runs. Starting pitcher Marc Habeck started the game by giving up two consecutive walks before he gave up an RBI single to right field to Yang Dai. The Taiwanese DH then hit another RBI single to give the CPBL a 2-0 lead.
Habeck recovered pretty well in the second inning as he faced only three batters.
Europe would get on the board in great fashion in the third inning.
With the bases loaded Mattia Mercuri drove the ball to the center fielder who bobbled the ball and allowed two European runners to score. Kevin Weijgertse came through with a single to left field to drive in two more runs to give Europ a 4-2 lead. Dudley Leonora followed with a single to right field and drove in another run before Urving Kemp hit a sac fly to drive in the sixth run for Europe. With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Europe scored once more when Paul Brands drew a bases loaded walk.
Marc Habeck was replaced by Alessandro Ciarla in the top of the fourth inning. Ciarla retired the side but got into trouble in the top of the fifth. Thanks to a two run homerun hit by Yang Wei in the top of the fifth ining, the CPBL inched closer.
Leo Rodriguez added one more run in the sixth inning on a solo shot to left field.
In the top of the seventh inning Ross Ismael entered the game. Despite recording two outs thanks to a double play, he could not get out of the inning as he threw a wild pitch with a runner at third base and then allowed a walk. His successor, Nicolo Clemente managed to get out of the inning without further damage, despite throwing a wild pitch as well.
In the top of the eighth inning Eduard Pirvu replaced Nicolo Clemente on the mound. The Romanian pitcher cruised through the inning as he retired the side.
Urving Kemp also contributed as he drove in a runner from second with a single to center field in the bottom of the eighth inning to make it 9-5.
Matz Schutte replaced Eduard Pirvu in the ninth and did not start well as he issued a walk but thanks to a double play and a 4-3 ground out he shut the door for the CPBL and thus Europe clinched its first win of the tournament.
Mattia Mercuri was the best hitter for Europe as he went 3 for 4 with two RBI and a run
Winning pitcher was Alessandro Ciarla who pitched three innings in relief and gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits, a walk and two strikeouts.
So far it is clear that the Italian players on the squad are the best hitters.
Best Dutchie at bat today was Kevin Weijgertse, who went 2 for 5 with two runs batted in and a run scored.
Mattia Mercuri was named MVP of this game .
