Asia Winter Baseball League 2016: No blow out score but Europe does not stand a chance vs NPB West

In a game in which team Europe collected more hits than their opponent, the opponent (NPB West) was more clutch.  Even though the Europeans were not blown away, they never stood a chance and fell to the Japanese team 10-5.

The foundation for today’s loss was laid in the fourth inning. Taylor Clemensia started well as he recorded two quick outs in the first inning, but then gave up a single, hit a batter with a pitch and then gave up another single that led to the game tying run. Europe had scored the opening run in the top of the first when Urving Kemp scored on Leo Rodriguez’ single to third base.

Clemensia pitched two good innings before he collapsed in the bottom of the fourth. After he recorded the first out, he gave up three walks and hit a batter with a pitch to give up the go-ahead run. That was the sign for manager Desi Relaford to replace him with Ludovico Coveri. But Coveri could not stop the Japanese from scoring as he gave up a sac fly, a fielders choice, a walk and a single that led to four more runs in this inning.

In the sixth inning, Coveri would allow the Japanese to score four more runs before he was replaced by Eduard Pirvu. Pirvu managed to get out of the inning without further damage and pitched two scoreless frames for the Europeans.

With the bases loaded in the seventh inning, Leo Rodriguez drew a walk for Europe’s second run of the game. One inning later, Europe started a rally that  brought them three more runs (one on a bases loaded walk and one on a hit by Federico Celli) . But that was all team Europe could do.

Taylor Clemensia took the loss as he pitched 3.1 innings in which he gave up 5 runs, three hits, walked four and struck out three.

Pitching results of the other pitchers:

Ludovico Coveri: 1.2 innings pitched, 5 runs, 5 earned runs, 3 hits, four BB, 1 SO
Eduard Pirvu: 2.0 innings pitched, 1 BB
Matz Schutte: 1.0  inning pitched, 2 BB

The best hitter for team Europe was catcher Vincent Ahrens, who went 3 for 4 with two runs scored and a strikeout.

Batting results of the other batters:

Urving Kemp: 0 for 4, 1 run, 1 BB
Mattia Mercuri: 1 for 4, 1 run, 2 SO
Jesus Ustariz: 0 for 3, 1 RBI, 2 BB,  1 SO
Federico Celli: 3 for 5, 2 RBI, 1 SO
Leo Rodriguez: 0 for 3, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 SO
Kyle Pollock: 0 for 1
Dudley Leonora: 1 for 4, 1 BB
Martin Muzik: 0 for 5, 2 SO
Eugene Helder: 0 for 4, 1 run, 1 BB, 3 SO

The key to this loss was the big number of walks given up and the timely hitting of the NPB West team (NPB Ni-Gun team of the Western League that is owned and operated by the Pacific League). The Japanese came through with runners on the bases. This time team Europe only scored three runs on RBI hits.
