Today the KNBSB (Royal Dutch Baseball and Softball Federation) revealed the big names on the preliminary roster for the upcoming World Baseball Classic. As expected the big names of MLB players are on the list.
The big names on this list are: Xander Bogaerts (Boston Red Sox), Didi Gregorius (New York Yankees), Kenley Jansen (Los Angeles Dodgers / free agent), Spencer Kieboom (Washington Nationals), Jurickson Profar (Texas Rangers), Jonathan Schoop (Baltimore Orioles) and Andrelton Simmons (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim).
Four of the aforementioned names participated in the 2013 edition of the World Baseball Classic: Andrelton Simmons, Jonathan Schoop, Xander Bogaerts and Kenley Jansen.
Schoop, Bogaerts and Gregorius played together before in the 2011 World Cup, which was won by the Netherlands.
Spencer Kieboom is still on the MLB roster of the Washington Nationals, but he spent the biggest chunk of the season at the AA affiliate Harrisburg. Only in the final weeks he received a call up and got one plate appearance in which he drew a walk. He did not have the opportunity to show his skills behind the plate.
Next to these players there are various former Major League players on the preliminary roster. Shairon Martis, Jair Jurrjens, Rick van den Hurk, Wladimir Balentien and Yurendell de Caster.
The preliminary roster is completed with various Minor Leaguers, players from the Dutch hoofdklasse and from the German Bundesliga (this can only be pitcher Mike Bolsenbroek from the Buchbinder Legionaere from Regensburg).
Depending on the permission of his club, the Atlanta Braves, don’t be surprised to see Ozzie Albies join the team as well.
Before the team will leave for Korea, the group will be cut from 50 players to 28.
