NPB, KBO and CPBL meet for new international tournament

According to m.appledaily.com.tw the CPBL, KBO and NPB want to organize a new post season tournament between the winners of each of those leagues. This tournament would replace the defunct Asia Series.

The three leagues have planned a new tournament in November 2017 with four participants. Question is who will be the fourth particpant. Will it be a team from China or Afbeeldingsresultaat voor CPBLa representative of the ABL (if that league will still exist by then)?

The Asia Series was first played as a four team tournament in 2005 with participants from China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. That inaugural tournament was won by the Chiba Lotte Marines, who beat the Samsung Lions 5-3.

It may not come as a surprise that in the seven editions of the tournament, the NPB teams won the most titles: Chiba Lotte Marines (2005), Nippon Ham Fighters (2006), Chunichi Dragons (2007), Seibu Lions (2008), Yomiuri Giants (2012). The Samsung Lions from Korea won in 2011 and the Canberra Cavalry surprisingly won the tournament in 2013, the final edition.

After the four first years (2005-2008), there was a two year hiatus before the tournament was oranized again in 2011. Afbeeldingsresultaat voor KBO baseball

In 2013 the European champion participated for the first time. Fortitudo Bologna played two games and lost both of them against the Samsung Lions and the Uni-President 7 Eleven Lions.

After the Canberra Cavalry won the tournament in 2013, one of their players claimed that he was approached to fix the game vs the Uni-President 7 Eleven Lions of the CPBL. Matt Blazynski claimed that he was approached by a male individual with an unspecified amount of cash at a night club, and was promised $30,000 in return for fixing the game in the next day. The claim was investigated by both Afbeeldingsresultaat voor NPB baseballthe police of Taiwan and the CPBL. Eventually the claim could never be proven as the footage of the security cameras did not show that Blazynski was approached by a male as he claimed.

The story of Blazynski isn’t all that strange as professional baseball in Taiwan has dealt with betting scandals and game fixing in the past.

Anyhow, the representatives of the CPBL, KBO and NPB will meet again in January to discuss more things on the tournament.
