Today, after a couple of rainouts earlier this week, the Kingdom of the Netherlands took on Gateway Community College from Phoenix in Arizona, an NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) Division II team.. In a very lopsided game vs the Geckos, the Dutch
Lars Huijer started on the mound for the Dutch as he cruised through the first inning. After a double by Randolph Oduber, a single by Stijn van der Meer and a walk, drawn by Yurendell deCaster, Curt Smith drew a bases loaded walk to give the Dutch a 1-0 lead, followed by an RBI force out at second, hit by Kalian Sams. The force out at second was made thanks to a great diving play by the Geckos shortstop.
But with one out, the Dutch managed to score four more runs when Dwayne Kemp drove in two on a double and Dashenko Ricardo tripled to drive in two more.
Lars Huijer pitched another perfect inning in the second before the Dutch would only score one run in the second inning, thanks to an infield hit by Curt Smith on which Stijn van der Meer scored the seventh run. In a post outing interview, Lars Huijer stated that he pitched well today. He said he hit the spots pretty good and did not allow a hit. A good last outing in Arizona.
In the top of the third inning, Kevin Heijstek replaced Lars Huijer and gave up one hit but got out of the inning without any damage. In the bottom of the third inning, Randolph Oduber drove in Dwayne Kemp and Gianfranco Wawoe to extend the score to 9-0.
Thanks to a triple by Sharlon Schoop and a double by Dwayne Kemp (his third of the day), the Dutch extended their lead to 10-0.
Kevin Kelly and Mark Pawelek both got out of their inning thanks to a 6-4-3 double play.
Eventually the Dutch would walk away to a 15-0 lead over the Gateway Community College Geckos when Sharlon Schoop drove in deCaster on a ground rule double followed by a hit by Gianfranco Wawoe, an error in the outfield and a two-run single by Chadwick Tromp before Tom de Blok and Loek van Mil both pitched a perfect inning to end the game
Even though Gateway Community College is only an NJCAA team, the win is a much-needed confidence builder for the Dutch. The hitters swung away pretty well, which resulted in multiple extra-basehits. Tomorrow and Saturday, the team will face another Korean opponent in the LG Twins.
