A few days ago, the Washington Nationals announced they had signed Joe Blanton. To make room on the roster, the Nats designated Spencer Kieboom for assignment. Today the Nats announced that they have sent Spencer outright to Syracuse.
The move to designate Spencer for assignment was a surprise to put it mildly, as he was still considered one of the prospects of the Washington Nationals.
The Nationals had seven days at least and ten days at most to make a move. Eventually it took them five days to sent him to the Syracuse Chiefs, where he is one of the four catchers on the roster. It remains to be seen if he will start the season at AAA, but in the last three seasons he made a step to the next level every sesaon (2014 A Full, 2015 A-Advanced and 2016 AA), so a move to AAA would make sense.
Apparently the Nationals never wanted to get rid of him as they did not place him on waivers with the risk that another team would claim him.
Spencer missed almost the entire 2013 season due to an injury and spend parts of the 2016 season on the DL as well. Hopefully he will not be hit by the injury bug in 2017, so he can prove his value as he is a fine defensive catcher.
