WBC 2017: Dutch restore order vs Israel in eight innings


In the second game between the two nations, Israel was no match for the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The Dutch needed seven innings to seal Israel’s fate. The Dutch needed eight frames to win this game 12-2.

The Dutch needed one inning to get warm but from the second inning the Big Orange Machine started to score. With runners in scoring position, Yurendell deCaster singled home Didi Gregorius and Jonathan Schoop to give the Dutch a 2-0 lead.

In the third inning, the Dutch would extend their lead to 6-0. With runners on first and second, Jurickson Profar laid down a sac bunt to advance the runners a base. Then Wladimir Balentien singled up the middle to drive in two. Balentien scored all the way from first on Didi Gregorius’ double to left field. Didi advanced to third on the throw towards home plate. Didi would score on Shawn Zarraga’s double to center field. With Andrelton Simmons on second and Jurickson Profar on first in the fourth inning, Wladimir Balentien singled him home with a line drive to right field. Jurickson Profar advanced to third on the hit. A towering homerun to right field by Didi Gregorius gave the Dutch a 10-run lead and it looked like the game would be done in seven innings.

But Nate Freiman spoiled the Dutch party as he hit a solo shot to center field to drive in the first run for Israel. In the meantime, Dutch starting pitcher, Jair Jurrjen, pitched a solid game. After six innings he had thrown 74 pitches. He gave up one run on five hits as he struck out five. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Jurrjens was replaced by Juan Carlos Sulbaran. He started to give up a double to Nick Rickles and a single through the right side to Blake Gailen that drove in the second run for Israel. After giving up two more hits, Sulbaran was replaced by SJim Ploeger who retired Ty Kelly for the third out of the inning.

From the fourth inning the run production stalled. Despite having runners in scoring position in the fifth inning, the Dutch failed to cash in. In the sixth and seventh frame the Kingdom of the Netherlands Did not get past second base.

But in the eighth, the Dutch stepped on it once more. With runners on the corners, Didi Gregorius hit a sac fly that drove in Jurickson Profar. After Israel’s Troy Neiman intentionally walked homerun threat Jonathan Schoop, Shawn Zaraga singled home Wladimir Balentien from second base to bring the difference back to ten runs (12-2).

Jim Ploeger took care of Cody Decker for the first out of Israel in the eighth inning and was replaced by Orlando Yntema. Yntema started his outing with hitting Nate Freiman with a pitch but then retired Zach Borenstein on a flyout to center field. There was a bit of a scare when Jurickson Profar and left fielder Sharlon Schoop crashed into each other. But no injury occurred. Yntema ended the game by striking out Nick Rickles.

Jair Jurrjens earned the win. Best hitter for the Dutch was Wladimir Balentien, who went 3 No automatic alt text available.for 4 with three RBI and three runs scored.

The Dutch did not only outscore team Israel, but also outhit them 15-8.

The Dutch will face Cuba in the next game for a spot in the championship round.
