In the final test before the WBC semi-final against Puerto Rico, team Kingdom of the Netherlands was no match for the Arizona Diamondbacks. In the five innings that Zack Greinke was on the mound, he limited the Dutch to six hits and one run. Eventually, the Dutch fell to the Diamondbacks 12-5.
D-Backs manager Lovullo took this game rather serious as he sent Zack Greinke, who was clearly out of the Dutch league, to the mound. The Dutch started with Rob Cordemans on the mound, who gave up two runs in the first inning.
Mike Bolsenbroek took the mound in the second inning and started with giving up consecutive walks. Zack Greinke then laid down a bunt that was fielded by catcher Shawn Zarraga who fired the ball to third baseman Xander Bogaerts, who tagged out Colin Bray. But that nice play did not stop the D-Back from scoring three runs.
In the top of the third inning, the Dutch got on the board. A single by Yurendell deCaster and a double to center field, hit by Kalian Sams put runners in scoring position. A sac fly to left field y Andrelton Simmons drove in the first and sole run for the Dutch with Zack Greinke on the mound.
The fourth inning proved to be a disastrous one. With one out, Chris Owings, the player Didi Gregorius platooned with during his Diamondbacks days, hit a solo homerun off Loek van Mil. After Van Mil loaded the bases thanks to a double, a walk and a catching error by first baseman Yurendell deCaster. Tom de Blok, who replaced Loek van Mil on the mound, gave up a bases clearing double to Jake Goebbert.
The fifth inning appeared to start well for the Kingdom of the Netherlands when Shawn Zarraga hit a leadoff single. But after Yurendell deCaster flied out to right field, Kalian Sams hit into an inning ending double play.
Kalian Sams made the score more bearable in the top of the seventh inning as he hit a two run homerun that cleared the left field fences easily.
In the top of the ninth, the Dutch loaded the bases on back-to-back singles by Stijn van der Meer and Dashenko Ricardo and a walk drawn by Curt Smith, before Kalian Sams drove in two runs with a single down the left field line. But that was all the Dutch could do as Dwayne Kemp hit into a game ending double play.
Perhaps the Dutch were still battling a jetlag as the result was nothing to write home about. But in games like this, you learn more from losing. It was clear that the pitching struggled at times and that the hitters could not get a grip on Zack Greinke.
