Rick van den Hurk earned his first win of the 2017 season. After two losses, Rick bounced back in an old fashioned way in which he was flat out dominating.
Unlike his previous two starts, in which Rick was pulled after only 4.2 and 5 inning, Rick lasted eight full frames today.
The only two hits that Van den Hurk allowed today, came from Tadahito Iguchi in the second inning, when he hit a double to right field and from Matt Duffy, who doubled to center field in the fifth. Of the eighth innings that Rick pitched today, he retired the side five times. Rick issued only one walk and retired eleven hitters by striking them out.
For eight innings, this game vs the Chiba Lotte Marines was a close one. Not only Rick van den Hurk kept the opponent on a leash, so did Marines starting pitcher Chihaya Sasaki. Only in the fifth inning, Sasaki gave up a run when Akira Nakamura hit an RBI double to left field. For the rest of his outing (6th and 7th innings), Sasaki kept the Softbank Hawks limited to a double and a single.
Only in the ninth inning, the Hawks walked away when they scored three runs. A double to left field, a walk, a single to right field and a triple to center field, led to a 4-0 final score.
In the video below, you can see the eleven strikeouts that Rick accomplished.
Thanks to this superb outing, Rick van den Hurk has lowered his ERA to 2.55.
