Once again two Minor League clubs will wear special jerseys as part of a promotion. Tomorrow, Thursday, June 29, the Asheville Tourists and the Lehigh Valley IronPigs will wear special themed jerseys which will be auctioned for charity after the game.
The Asheville Tourists (Colorado Rockies A Full Season affiliate) will adopt the name Asheville Hippies for a night. The team will wear a tie-dye jersey with the name Hippies on the chest. Their cap will have the regular logo but with tie-dye colors as well and they are purple with a Jade bill.
Asheville has a reputation for being a hippie town, so the name can easily be explained.
It all started as a Twitter troll attack when the Greenville Drive (Boston Red Sox, A Full Season affiliate in the South Atlantic League) referred to the Tourists as the “Asheville Hippies.” It resulted in a friendly challenge offered by the Asheville Tourists and accepted by Greenville. The teams determined that whoever would win the majority of the head-to-head contests in 2016, the losing team had to wear a specialty jersey for one game in 2017. If the Tourists won the 24-game series Greenville would become the “Rednecks” and if Greenville won the series the Tourists would become the “Hippies.” The series ended in a 12-12 tie. As the Tourists considered this a loss, they opted to accept to wear the specialty jerseys. Greenville, on the other hand, declined to do so.
Asheville Tourists Children’s Fund will benefit from the money raised with the auction.
Another minor league team will honor a fabled team of their parent club tomorrow.
This isn’t the first time the Lehigh Valley IronPigs salute their parent club, the Philadelphia Phillies and will adopt the name Whiz Kids. The 1950 season Phillies were a very young team (average age 26.4) that made it to the World Series. Their nickname was the Whiz Kids. The team was swept by the Yankees, who won their second of five consecutive World Series titles.
The website of the IronPigs announced the promotion as follows: “The IronPigs will change their name to the “Whiz Kids” for “Salute to Philadelphia Night” on Thursday, June 29 at 7:05 p.m., paying homage to both the Phillies’ legendary 1950 team and Philly’s love affair with all things Cheesesteaks, including Cheese Whiz!”
In conjunction with the one-game name change, the “Whiz Kids” also unveiled a new on-field cap and jersey to commemorate the “Salute to Philadelphia” Night festivities. Last year the team wore a black cheesesteak cap, this year it will be a red one.
Fans are encouraged to use #WhizKids on social media for a chance to win a “Whiz Kids” prize pack and to see their social posts at the brand-new LVWhizKids.com.
