World Port Tournament 2017: Dutch win consolation game vs Cuba

In what was the last game for both teams, the Kingdom of the Netherlands bested Cuba 3-1. A three-run inning was all the Dutch needed to beat Cuba for the second time this week. Manager Sidney de Jong used four pitchers to keep the Cubans in check.

Before the game, pitcher Rob Cordemans and infielder Dwayne Kemp were laureled for playing 100 games for team Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The Dutch could have taken a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but a baserunning boner by Gianison Boekhoudt prevented the Dutch from scoring a run as Boekhoudt ran towards third base when Dudley Leonora hit the ball towards the Cuban shortstop, who threw out Boekhoudt at third.

But in the third inning, the Dutch did what should have been done one inning earlier: scoring runs. Nick Peels led off with a single towards the shortstop, followed by a sac bunt by Chris Garia. But Cuban pitcher Cesar Raul Garcia committed a fielding error that allowed Garia to reach base safely. Stijn van der Meer also laid down a bunt to load the bases. Dwayne Kemp followed with a single down the right field line to drive in Nick Peels and Chris Garia for the 2-0 lead. Even though Gianison Boekhoudt hit into a double play, Stijn van der Meer could score from third base.

In the meantime, Diegomar Markwell just allowed three hits in 3.1 shutout innings but was replaced by Jim Ploeger nevertheless. Ploeger would pitch 2.2 innings and allowed the only Cuban run in the sixth inning. Ploeger was pulled in the seventh as Kevin Kelly took over on the mound. Kelly and his successor Mike Bolsenbroek had perfect outings as Kelly struck out one and Bolsenbroek fanned two.

Jim Ploeger earned the win, Mike Bolsenbroek earned the save.

Best hitter for the Dutch was Stijn van der Meer, who went 2 for 3 with a run scored.

At the start of this tournament, people would have wished for this game to be the final, but the Dutch are looking to the future and were trying to fit in younger players.
The final will be played between Taiwan and Japan, that beat Curaçao 15-0 a mercy rule shortened game.
