The Frederick Keys announced Curaçaoan outfielder Ademar Rifaela has been named player of the week of the Carolina League for July 3-9. Ademar is the sixth Keys player in eight weeks to earn the player of the week honors.
In the week of July 3rd – July 9th, Ademar went 12-for-19 with a home run, a double, six RBIs and three runs scored (.632/.632/.842 in five games). This included four multi-hit games and three multi-RBI games. On Friday, July 7, Rifaela tied his career-high with four hits against Myrtle Beach.
In 75 games this season, Rifaela is batting .312/.363/.543 with 15 home runs, 46 RBIs, 17 doubles, 43 runs scored and three stolen bases. Currently, the Keys outfielder is tied for third place in home runs. Ademar is fourth in slugging percentage and tied for fourth in hitting.
Signed in 2013 as an international free agent by the Baltimore Orioles, Ademar worked his way up from Rookie (DSL) to A-Advanced nowadays. In the previous seasons, Ademar never came close to .300, so it is safe to say that 2017 is his breakout year.
With six players named player of the week lately, one would expect the Keys would be in the lead of their division, but nothing could be further from the truth as the club is in the lower part of the standings.
