On the second day of the fourteenth round, only two games were played as the game between De Glaskoning Twins and Hoofddorp Pioniers was rained out. Curaçao Neptunus was way too strong for DSS even though it took them until the fifth inning to make that clear and L&D Amsterdam Pirates had to go deep to beat relegation candidate Pickles UVV.
DSS 5 – 13 Curaçao Neptunus
Until the fifth inning, the game between Curaçao Neptunus and DSS was an attractive one. Both teams seemed to be each other’s equal. DSS took advantage of the struggles of Orlando Yntema in the third inning. After a long disease, Yntema is back on the mound. Neptunus is bringing him slowly. Last week Yntema pitched one inning and today the intention was to throw three frames, but he did not finish the third inning as DSS scored twice with him on the mound. Mitchel Dautzenberg opened the score from second base on Odion Gouverneur’s single to right field. With the bases loaded, Tino van Erk grounded into a fielder’s choice on which Gouverneur could score the second run for DSS. But Neptunus would bounce back in the bottom of the third inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Christian Diaz singled to right field and drove in Benjamin Dille and Gianison Boekhoudt. Dwayne Kemp drove in Stijn van der Meer for the go-ahead run.
In the next inning, it was the other way around. DSS scored thrice and Neptunus crossed home plate twice. But that fourth inning was an omen of a collapsing DSS offense as the two runs that Neptunus scored were unearned. In the next three innings, Neptunus would walk away eventually as the team scored two in the fifth, three in the sixth and seventh.
Elton Koeiman, who replaced Orlando Yntema in the third, earned the win. Koeiman lasted 5.2 innings in which he gave up three runs on six hits and a walk and fanned three. Robyn Clara, who replaced Donny Breek at the start of the fifth inning, gave up eight runs (five earned) on eight hits and a walk.
Best hitter for Curaçao Neptunus was Gianison Boekhoudt, who went 2 for 3 with a home run, two RBI and three runs scored. The most runs were driven in by Christian Diaz (three on three hits out of five at bats).
Pickles UVV 3 – 4 L&D Amsterdam Pirates
In today’s game, L&D Amsterdam had to go deep to clinch the victory. Even though the team kept Pickles UVV in check for eight innings, the team from Utrecht scored three runs in the ninth to make it a close affair in the end.
Kevin Heijstek cruised through eight innings in which he limited UVV to two hits, and struck out seven and gave up a walk. Currently, Pirates have the two best pitchers in the hoofdklasse, earned run average-wise as Heijstek has an ERA of 1.26 and Rob Cordemans one of 1.58.
Pirates seemed to walk away with the win slowly as the scored a run in the third, the fourth, the sixth and in the seventh inning. In the third inning, Remco Draijer opened the score with a solo home run. Nick Urbanus extended Pirates’ lead to 2-0 in the third when he scored on Danny Rombley’s single up the middle. Two fielding errors in the sixth inning allowed Nick Urbanus to score the third run for Pirates. After Norbert Jongerius got on base on a double in the seventh inning, he advanced to third on Remco Draijer’s fly out to center field and scored thanks to Zerzinho Croes, who hit towards third base and reached first base safely on the throwing error by Berend Ruben.
Everything appeared to be safe but when Kevin Heijstek was replaced at the start of the ninth inning, things almost went wrong for Pirates. Daan Hendrix recorded two quick outs but then couldn’t get out of the inning. Consecutive singles by Tijmen Takke and Berend Ruben and a walk drawn by Sergino Martis, loaded the bases. Then Julian Rip drove in Ruben and Takke before Martis scored on a wild pitch. But eventually, Hendrix retired Julian Goins on a 6-3 groundout for the final out of the game.
Of course, Kevin Heijstek earned the win, while Jurjen van Zijl took the loss as he gave up three runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk in six innings. Van Zijl also struck out five.
Best hitter for L&D Amsterdam Pirates was Remco Draijer, who went 2 for 4 with his solo home run.
