Curaçao native Jair Jurrjens is having a decent start in the Dominican Winter League (LIDOM) with the Tigres del Licey, even though the club is coming off a slow start.
The Tigres del Licey, multiple champions of the Dominican Republic, have a 4-10 start. Nevertheless, Jair Jurrjens is doing pretty well so far.
The Dutch/Curaçaoan pitcher is serving a suspension in US baseball due to the alleged use of PEDs. With the Oklahoma City Dodgers, Jurrjens posted a 4-3 record with a 4.64 ERA in eleven appearances (ten starts). The opponents batting average with Jair on the mound was rather high with .290.
With the Tigres del Licey, Jurrjens had three starts so far. His first start turned out to be a loss. Against the current leader in the standings, the Estrellas Orientales, Jurrjens lasted 2.2 innings in which he gave up five runs on six hits but only one run was earned.
In his next two starts, he got no-decisions. In his second start, also against the Estrellas Orientales, Jurrjens lasted five innings in which he allowed two hits and struck out four.
In his third start so far, vs Gigantes del Cibao, the Tigres del Licey lost again but in this game, Jurrjens kept the Gigantes in check rather well. In 6.1 innings, Jair gave up a run on two hits, walked three and struck out seven. But he did not get the necessary run support to earn the win.
With these outings, Jair has posted an ERA of only 1.29. His opponents hit a modest .189 with him on the mound.
