Van den Hurk highly ineffective today

In today’s 12-6 loss, Rick van den Hurk had an enormous off day. The tall Dutch pitcher was responsible for a big chunk of the runs the Seibu Lions scored.

After Rick worked his way through the first two innings without giving up a run, things went wrong in the third frame as he gave up a grand slam home run and a two-run home run in the very same inning.

Rick settled down and cruised through the fourth and the fifth inning but then again in the sixth inning things went wrong again. After giving up two walks he gave up a single to Shogo Akiyama that loaded the bases before Sosuke Genda drove in a run on a single to left field. At that point, Rick was replaced by Shota Takekuma who gave up a two-run single and a three-run home run. Rick was credited for three of the five that scored.

So in total Rick was tabbed for ten earned runs as he gave up seven hits, walked six, faced 29 batters in just 5.1 innings. Rick needed 123 pitches in this game.

It is the first time since joining the Hawks, Rick had a bad outing like this.

Eventually, the Softbank Hawks fell to the Seibu Lions 12-6. Like last season, the Hawks are having a slow start. Of the nineteen games the team played, they won ten and lost nine. They are in third place, trailing the Seibu Lions by 5.5 games.

The other Dutchie in the NPB, Wladimir Balentien from Curaçao, had a good performance today as he went 2 for 3 today with an RBI, a walk and a run scored. Nevertheless, his Yakult Swallows, the other team from Tokyo next to the Yomiuri Giants, lost to the Hanshin Tigers 4-2.
