Darren Seferina released but picked up by Brewers

Curaçao native Darren Seferina was released by the St. Louis Cardinals last Saturday. But the infielder found a new club in no time. Yesterday, the Milwaukee Brewers picked him up and sent him to AA Biloxi Shuckers of the Southern League.

Darren Seferina. After a successful season with the Springfield Cardinals, in which he hit .277, the 24-year old came off a slow start this year. When he started his final game with Springfield, his batting average stood at .167 but after he went 0 for 3 it dropped to .159. As the Cardinals needed to make room for their no. 9 prospect Randy Arozarena, Seferina was the victim and was released.

Seferina was picked up by the Brewers and sent to Biloxi. Last night he saw action immediately as the Shuckers used him as a pinch-runner in the tie-break of the tenth inning. Seferina was placed at second base. On a flyout to center field, Darren advanced to third base and scored on Tyler Heineman’s line drive single to center field.

Darren Seferina used to be one of the top prospects of the St. Louis Cardinals. With his professional debut in 2014, he started with the State College Spikes of the New York-Penn League (A Short Season) instead of debuting at rookie level. Darren managed to move up a level every year but his growth stalled this year. One can wonder if the Cardinals could not have shown a bit more patient as Darren was the Post Season All-Star of the Florida State League in 2017.
