In this episode of Dutchies around the world, we pay attention to Andrelton Simmons, Zander Wiel, Juremi Profar, Kevin Josephina, Wladimir Balentien and Phildrick Llewellyn.
So far, Andrelton Simmons is having a career year. In previous years he never topped .300, although he came rather close last year with a .292 average, but in the 2019 season he his hitting well above .300. Throughout the season Andrelton is hitting well but in his last seven games, he posted a .385 that lead to a seasonal .305. In 42 games at shortstop, he has committed three errors, leading to a .980 fielding percentage.
The son of former Lakers assistant coach Randy Wiel, is having a pretty good second year at AAA. With the Rochester RedWings, Zander is batting .269. Compared with the .196 of 2018, this is a major improvement. In 32 games, he has clubbed 6 home runs, 2 triples and 6 doubles. Even though his player page tells us he is an outfielder, he has played 26 games at first base and still did not commit an error.
The younger brother of A’s utility player Jurickson Profar seems to have a breakout year at AA. In his third year with the Frisco RoughRiders (AA, Texas League), he is finally batting above .300, .322 to be exact. In the previous two seasons, the Curaçaoan batted .263 (2017) and .232 (2018). In the first weeks of the season, Juremi did not get that much playing time and his batting average was subpar. But in the past few weeks, he is getting more playing time and his batting average has improved considerably. In general, Juremi is used as a first baseman and DH but he has also played at third and second base in 2019.
In his second season with the Florida FireFrogs, the 22-year old Curaçaoan is still struggling at the plate. Last year he didn’t top .230 (.227) and so far in 2019 he is batting .224. Of his last ten games, Kevin batted an impressive 3 for 5 on May 15 against the St. Lucie Mets. In the 12 games he played at first base, he is still perfect. In the 6 games he played at third base, he committed one error, leading to a .929 fielding percentage.
The Curaçaoan slugger has been reactivated from the inactive list by the Yakult Swallows. About two weeks ago, Wladimir was taken from the NPB roster because the club had some concerns about the condition of his upper body. More information about the injury were not disclosed at the time. Today he is making his first appearance with the other team from Tokyo after being back on the NPB roster. So far this season, he is hitting .289 with eight home runs.
The 25-year old Curaçaoan is having a good year so far in Paderborn. With the German 1. Bundesliga club Untouchables Paderborn, he is batting .382. Phildrick is used as a DH, outfielder, and catcher. Partially thanks to his efforts, the Untouchables are sharing second place with the Solingen Alligators with a 12-4 record, trailing the first place Bonn Capitals by one game. Last Saturday, Phildrick went 2 for 5 and stole three bases vs the newly promoted Wesseling Vermins.
