U23 European Championship 2019: Dutch clinch first win

Already eliminated from the semi-finals, team Kingdom of the Netherlands clinched its first victory of the tournament by beating Germany, that was unbeaten until today, 2-1 in another close affair.

Two pitchers of Oosterhout Twins and one of Meerlease Pioniers had strong outings. Thomas Roijers (Twins) pitched four solid innings in which he gave up four hits, walked two and struck out two. Angelo Wicklert (Meerlease Pioniers), lasted one no-hit inning, in which he gave up a walk. Raf Cocu, pitched the final two innings in which he gave up the game tying (unearned) run in the top of the seventh but earned the win nevertheless.

In the third inning, the Dutch opened the score for the first time this tournament when Jiandido Tromp got on base thanks to a fielding error, followed by a walk drawn by Julian Rip. A muffed throw on a hit towards the second baseman, allowed Marco van der Wijst to reach base and to load the bases. A groundout to first base by Taylor Clemensia allowed Jeandro Tromp to score.

In the first inning, Germany had a good opportunity to take the lead but when David Grimes hit towards left field the runner at second thought the ball would drop for a base hit and started to run. But left fielder Julian Rip made an incredible catch and bowled off the runner off second base.

But once again this was a game in which the Dutch didn’t hit much. In total, the Dutch collected only three hits compared to the five base hits Germany collected.
Anyhow, the Dutch took advantage of some miscues on the German side. After Germany had tied the game in the top of the seventh inning thanks to a throwing error by first baseman Taylor Clemensia, the Dutch clinched the walk off victory. Raul Jacobs reached base on a throwing error and advanced to second base on the error. Jacobs was moved over to third on a sac bunt by Tommy van de Sande.

A single to left field by Bob van der Meer drove in Jacobs for the walk-off run.

Bob van der Meer was the best hitter of team Kingdom of the Netherlands as he went 1 for 1 with the game-winning RBI.

Despite the loss, Germany finishes as winner despite the same nuber of wins as France. But as Germany beat the French in their mutual game.
